Exhibition of sand pit proposal
20 July 2004 - An exhibition of proposals to open up a sand pit alongside Pine Woods Road provided a lively forum for residents of Longworth and Hinton Waldrist to express their views. The exhibition, which was held in Longworth Village Hall, detailed how 28 hectares of agricultural land lying to the west of Pine Woods Road, and extending from the A420 almost as far north as Hinton Road, could be used for the extraction of soft sand by Hanson plc, who recently purchased the land.

Hanson organized the exhibition to "take on board the views of local residents and incorporate as many of them as we can into the planning application," which they intend to submit later this year. They intend to extract about 125,000 tons of soft sand a year for about 10 years. The site would be worked in stages, with no more than about 10% of the site area being worked at any one time. Areas of the site already worked would be progressively restored and returned to agricultural use. There is no intention to apply for permission to use the site for landfill waste disposal.

Local residents expressed concerns about a variety of issues, including noise, dust, visual intrusion, and traffic. Hanson representatives were on hand to listen to these concerns, and to explain the steps they would take to mitigate the impact of the sand workings.

The traffic impact was one area of concern that appears to be outside Hanson's control. Questioned about the practicality of up to thirty 20-ton trucks per day exiting Pine Woods road onto the busy A420, a Hanson representative stated that this issue will have to be examined by the Highways Department.
