Peter McGregor was born in Greenock and has no ancestors who were not Scottish at least as far
back as the early 1700s. His family moved to Cardiff when he was 10 and after 18 he lived in England,
mainly in the Manchester area or in London. In 1988 he and his wife Marion came to Longworth, where
she died in 2001 from a brain tumour, having survived an earlier one in 1989. Marion was active
in the Kingsmoor Day Centre and Meals on Wheels. They had a son Iain, and a daughter Fiona, who
died from another cancer about a year after her mother. There are five grandchildren.
After University and National Service as a junior officer in the Corps of Royal Engineers he started
work as a management trainee in the heavy electrical division of Ferranti Ltd. He eventually became
Chief Executive of the Division, and a non-executive director of an Italian company. During this time
he was active in politics and stood as a Parliamentary Candidate in 1964.
He was then recruited to set up a policy foundation created by the UK and (West) German Governments.
From there he was invited to become Industrial Director of the National Economic Development Office.
Later he took up a post representing the interests of major UK and European international contractors
in dealing with the UK Government, the European Commission and the World Bank. At that time he was
also an Associate Director of a management consultancy practice. In his later years he became a
specialist in finding ways to deal with bureaucratic obstacles. He also did a good deal of freelance
journalism at this time, mainly on political/economic issues.
In addition to being a Parish Councillor he is a Governor of Longworth Primary School, a Trustee of
the charity Action for People in Conflict, and a director and Company Secretary of the management
company which oversees the common services of the houses in the small hamlet in Pine Woods Road,
which was formed from the old Longworth House mansion and the various converted barns and houses adjoining.
He plays golf badly, gardens, likes classical music, writes novels and tries to get them published,
and enjoys being a part of the European civilisation.
